In late 2018, artist Zhang Ting-jia collaborated with the "Monster Cuban Sandwich Shop" in Tainan's West Central District to launch a custom painting pop-up shop. The main idea for this shop came from my 2017 Master's thesis at NCKU, titled “Any-object-whatever(so called AOW)”
In Thesis AOW, I described three ways to intervene in a city:
1. Statically recording changes in materials.
2. Interacting dynamically with the city.
3. Observing the relationship between objects in a larger context.
The launch of the "JiaJia Universe Pop-up Shop" hoped to use a simple and easy-to-understand way to let people experience the intuition and interaction of these three methods.
(1) We observed people or groups as objects and recorded their history.
(2) We entered public space and participated in the city through construction and action.
(3) We recreated the object by combining imagination with its history.
Viewers could enjoy these seemingly complex processes in a relaxed way. During interactions with participants, I put aside my identity as an artist and became a focused listener. I recorded the participants' history and life details. Then, I translated these into concrete, visual images for them. This provided a visual story about their present, past, and future, like recreating time and space.
In the later stages of the pop-up, other shops like "Hill Dessert Studio" and "Bird Fish Dessert Studio" also ordered paintings. The work expanded from translating individual stories to translating brands. Because of this, the JiaJia Universe Pop-up Shop project became the starting point and foundation for other projects, continuing to refine my creative path.
