Reel Memories
In 2020, artists Zhang Ting-jia and Hu Fang-yu participated in the competition for the Taipei Hakka Cultural Center's "2020 Taipei Hakka Nest Artwork Commission Project." Later, along with two other groups of artists, we exhibited artworks at Huashan 1914 Creative Park. The theme used the Hakka "Nest" to imagine life.
We were inspired by the "Dragon Bone Waterwheel," a traditional tool used by Hakka people during the farming era. The sound of its rolling wooden sections inspired us. We used modern metal axles and chain structures to recreate traditional irrigation and farming activities.
The artwork is a 180x180x180cm cube made of four interactive metal chain scroll paintings. Viewers can enter the cube and scroll through the paintings to explore the cultural activities promoted by the Taipei Hakka Cultural Center. This responds to the "urban void" caused by the renovation of the Center in 2019. At Huashan 1914 Creative Park, we continued the cultural activities that the Center creates.
On the scroll mechanism, you can see paintings printed on translucent fabric. The slight dye effect combines digital printing with traditional blue dye techniques. You can see scenes from the Taipei Hakka Cultural Park, such as bamboo trellises, sculptures, and public art.
Memories of many Hakka cultural activities—like outdoor farming experiences, craft workshops, food exhibitions, summer camps, and performance art projects—are condensed into this small, exquisite cube. This is the "Nest" of the Hakka Cultural Center. We believe that artworks requiring physical interaction can bring deep memories to viewers. Just like visiting a friend's home, the memories of talking and laughing will stay in our hearts longer.
