Preface
I have many moving moments I want to share with you all. Beyond the joint publication with the Design Center that I shared yesterday, "Lab Any-project-whatever" has always been my dream project. It takes the content of my thesis, "Any-object-whatever", and formalizes it into a real research lab where I can work hands-on with designers and students.
I would like to thank Professor Yao Chao-chih, Professor Hsueh Cheng-luen, and Professor Wu Ping-sheng for their continued encouragement and support. I also want to thank the designers I worked with most closely: Yu-jie, Yong-zai, Xin-yu, Ya-jun, Qiao-lin, and Xin-tian. Thank you to the students I met over these past two semesters. Together, we completed so many installations and workshops, creating so many memories. I wanted to record everything clearly in this book as the best way to account for this time to myself.
Currently, there are no plans to print this book physically, but it is designed with the logic of a physical book. I intentionally used double-page spreads for the layout, hoping to let you feel the "breathing state" of opening a book. I also used many full-bleed patterns to convey the spirit of the projects, allowing you to experience the hidden logic that exists within these seemingly unrelated cases. I have tried my best to record everyone who participated. If I missed anyone, please let me know. I cherish everyone I have worked with, and I welcome you to look here for the traces of our struggles together.
Ting-jia Zhang
In 2017, Ting-jia Zhang officially established his personal studio, working across the fields of spatial design, art design, and identity integration. He collaborates with cultural units on public art, works with commercial units on brand strategy and spatial integration, and plans custom private homes with private owners.
In February 2021, he joined the Design Center at the College of Planning and Design, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), as a Project Lecturer. He founded Lab Any-project-whatever with the aim of integrating and supporting various campus identity designs, overall event image planning, campus space development strategies, and interior design and renovation through on-site participation. Together with the project designers at the center, he uses "aesthetic guerrilla tactics" to make campus life more colorful. Through these projects, he reflects on his own experiences, continuing to learn and grow. If you like the beliefs of our lab, please feel free to contact me.
Lab Any-project-whatever
The background and discourse of "Lab Any-project-whatever" are built upon Ting-jia Zhang's 2017 thesis, "Any-object-whatever". Day after day, we experience the network of material flows connected by various "readymades" (found objects) in the city. As perceivers, we enter the field and experience the environmental and spatial information of the event in that moment. We judge, perceive, critique, create, and reflect.
Contemporary creators deal with more than just traditional geometric or visual problems. They are dynamically participating in every second of life, weighing the pros and cons in response to sudden situations. Furthermore, they face users, owners, designers, and vendors in a decentralized way, confronting the most real challenges in every project.
In addition to handling "any-objects" through "projects" with the spirit described in *Any-object-whatever*, the lab also continues to run the "Sensory Machine Workshop Series" (started by Ting-jia Zhang in 2017) and the "Any-Noise-whatever" experimental music project (started in 2012).
