Ting-jia Zhang

Ting-jia Zhang is an artist and architectural designer based in Tainan's old city center. He is dedicated to architectural design, art installations, brand identity integration, and graphic design services. Zhang excels at integrating artistic and design practices across multiple scales. His work uses accessible, in-depth text to guide the viewer step-by-step in understanding his art and design concepts.

In his thesis Any-object-whatever, he starts with an insight into the spontaneous, co-woven living spaces of the contemporary city. He draws upon psychology, philosophy, architecture, and art theory to articulate the frenetically interwoven creative atmosphere following the information explosion era, seeking contemporary adaptability for both the "user" and the "designer."

Representative Artworks

2017: Led the NCKU team for the Weiwuying Southeast Public Art Project, advocating that any object can be reused to create large-scale public art.

2018: Set up the JiaJia Universe custom painting temporary workstation project at "Monster Cuban Sandwich" in Tainan's West Central District. He interviewed clients to create unique, custom-made paintings tailored to each individual.

2019: Collaborated with the Taipei Hakka Cultural Center on the project Identifying New Hakka Images Through Temporary Construction. He held participatory creative workshops, reproducing participants' paintings and realizing them on public art installations.

2020: Created the Time Scroll project, using mechanical devices to allow viewers to enter the space and operate the viewing machine themselves, altering the traditional art-viewing experience.

Representative Spatial Designs

2019: Designed the private residence House of Sugarcane on Chongshan 13th Street in Tainan. The design reflects the ethereal and quiet atmosphere of the expanding residential area. Through five scenes related to the sugarcane industry—which flourished since the Japanese colonial era—he constructed the tranquil space desired by the homeowner.

Late 2019: Collaborated with the Tainan Enterprise Culture and Arts Foundation, 5% Design Action, and San Hai Tun Social Enterprise on the Xinhua Homecoming Design Experimental Market. Using three construction methods to make five cubic units, he created a mobile and reversible event space. Combined with works by returning Xinhua creators, the project was held at the Xinhua Wude Hall to share, exchange, and experience various aspects of social design actions with local residents and design enthusiasts.

2020: Collaborated with the Tainan Enterprise Culture and Arts Foundation, Cha Bu Wu, and 7tao Art on the Tainan Circular Economy School (C.E. School). They analyzed the reuse potential of existing spatial and architectural elements. By planning the materials perfectly, they completed the design using the minimum number of boards. They also connected local businesses that support the circular economy to build a circular-friendly alliance in the Fucheng Confucius Temple district.
