TING-JIA ZHANG
House of Sugarcane

"I want a simple home."

The client's firm tone signaled that I needed to refine everything to its purest form. With a very limited budget, we studied old maps of Tainan together, pondering what concept could support this lightweight home within a 38-year-old residence on Chongshan Road. Unlike Tainan's old city center, there are no complex historical roots to rely on here. Chongshan Road primarily served as a sugar transport railway during the Japanese colonial period; the once-wild scenery is now a dense urban landscape.

The client's apartment unit is located in the center of the building, relying solely on a light well for natural light, without any street views. Therefore, after multiple discussions, we decided to use five "sugar industry scene" decorations as a starting point to weave together this compact combination of three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

The decorations "Rethinking the Sugar Journey" and "Haian Road Fresh Sugarcane Juice" are located in the public spaces of the Nanyang Sugarcane House. Upon entering, low-brightness dark green paint serves as the base, creating a social atmosphere that is understated but not cold. The other three pieces—"Taiwan Sugar Corporation," "Huwei Sugar Train," and "Ten Drum Rende Creative Park"—are placed in the three private rooms. Each uses low-saturation paint as a base to make the private spaces more relaxing and tranquil.

The multi-layered sugar imagery is complemented by furniture coated in oak-colored wood stain, adding stability to the overall space. This completes a work with a hint of café and B&B style, satisfying the client's "multiple imaginations" of home.

After moving in, the client often invites me to stay over. Requiring only flameless cookware, the client mostly eats out or has salads. Strolling through the alleys around Chongshan Road at night, a five-minute walk leads to PX Mart for any ingredients needed. We discovered a mood distinct from Tainan's old city center; there are not many famous small shops, but there is the coziness and beauty of strolling through a residential neighborhood.
